Movie Review: John Tucker Must Die

We planned on watching “March of the Emperors” (curiously re-titled “Penguin, Penguin, Paano Ka Ginawa?”) last Friday night but apparently this Oscar-winning documentary is not commercial enough for most movie houses in the metro. Hence, we ended up seeing the more available but less acclaimed, “John Tucker Must Die.”

Britanny Snow, who adequately fills the pigeonholes vacated by Hillary and Lindsay, plays the invisible new girl in school who soon gets caught up in a plot to break John Tucker’s heart, hatched by his three scornful ex-girlfriends, one of which is the sassy two-hit wonder Ashanti. Jesse Metcalffe, of Desperate Housewives’ fame, is on auto-pilot as he plays the three-timing John Tucker.

Granted, JTMD is a pastiche of more memorable sorority flicks (“Mean Girls”, “Bring It On”, “Clueless”) with a tired don’t-get-mad-get-even storyline. However, there are enough chuckle-worthy scenes in this movie, the thong scene being one, to keep those easily tickled, such as I, entertained. I also like how the movie reminded me of that early ‘90s TV show, “Parker Lewis Can’t Lose”, which was must-see TV during my pre-pubescent years.
